Reader, I wasn’t sure that the word “sporadic” actually had anything to do with mushroom spores when I titled this post, so I googled the etymology to be sure, and lo!
Ooooh I'll check that out! I am, but I haven't seen everything yet--I need to watch that one!! Have you watched The Orville? We're watching that now--omg it's hilarious! But also a very lovely homage!
Coincidence is weird. Just this week I’ve been reading about mushrooms in relationship to companion species. I am working on a discussion of intersectional humanism, which take for the good of liberal humanism and attempt to jettison the bad, of which there is plenty of course. Anyway, part of it and vital materialism is the idea of interdependence and of forming relationships between animals, humans, and, potentially, machines. Mushrooms and fungi in general and bacteria and dogs and cats and herding animals etc. all interact with humanity in ways that we tend to not think about. But to try and impact this world we need to think about those inter-relationships
We watched the first two eps of Orville and were “meh”. Then we went back and fell in love. Hoping beyond hope we will get one more season. So. Good!
Along with Donna Haraway on companion species and Rosi Braidotti on the same and posthumanism, this piece: https://read.dukeupress.edu/environmental-humanities/article/1/1/141/8082/Unruly-Edges-Mushrooms-as-Companion-SpeciesFor
I can’t remember if you’re a Trekker or not: on Star Trek: D Alexa iscovery, the ship flies on a mycelial network
