Love this perspective! I feel like I'm currently in a career-related identity crisis, and I found your thoughts encouraging and grounding! I'm trying to shift my mindset away from "changing directions now would mean I've wasted so much time" to "it would actually be more wasteful to continue doing something that no longer aligns or brings me joy." Thanks for sharing!
YAY!! That’s so funny, because I want to switch careers, too! I just want to do something that I actually WANT to do at this point, but it’s a difficult pivot. I think it’s worth doing, though. I can’t imagine letting 20 years go by and this point, and then looking back and wishing I just done the thing now, even though I’m 47.
I completely agree! I think it can be super clarifying (and nerve-wracking too!) to ask yourself how you'll feel in ten, twenty, etc. years from now. I don't want to end up in a place with nothing but regrets and what-ifs, and I think this approach is applicable at any age! I admire you and think it's wonderful you're doing an MFA program and pursuing your passions. You're such a talented writer and I'm rooting for you!
You've taken the time to examine where you've been and where you're going in a way most of us don't ever do. It's a lot to think about. Most people I know who are in the middle of their anticipated/expected/projected life spans, i.e., your age, are on a fast track to financial security. Money seems to be the worship icon for middle age.
This link will take you to a meditation that seems kind of perfect to think about in middle age. While the words come from a Franciscan priest, the ideas of care, community, and humility are universal, and when I read them I thought of you and your mission to use your remaining 30 or 40 or 80 years in a fulfilling and enriching way.
Ooohhhh, I’m excited to read this!!! Thank you!!! ❤️
I think our society encourages that—money as the worship icon in middle age. When capitalism is the ruler, how else are people supposed to measure? It’s hard to escape it, not just in values, but quite literally, because such large amounts of money are needed just to pay for simple healthcare. It’s a bananas world we live in.

And we are the ones who can and must change the bananas world.
