Welcome!

Glossing, if you’re not familiar, is the way we annotate a text to offer a bit of illumination. We make glosses in the margins to explain a paragraph, or add a little bit of additional information, or to offer an interpretation of the text. These short essays, hopefully between 100 and 500 words, are little glosses of my daily life.

I was inspired to start this project after picking up Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights. The fuchsia leaves on the cover drew my eye, and when I opened the book, I was instantly enchanted. The book is a series of short essays, all on the theme of delight, that he began on his birthday. He wrote an essay almost every day for a year. I love a creative practice, and I love the short essay format, and I’m a chronic abandoner of blogs, so I clearly needed to try my own essay writing endeavor. And here we are.

What you’ll likely read about

I’m a writer, mostly of science fiction and fantasy with a splattering of horror, so there will likely be some glosses about writing and craft. I’m a runner, and hopefully I can write about running without boring anyone to death. I have a Ph.D. in English (literary theory, rhetorical theory), so something heady could crop up from time to time. I practice Buddhism, love music, drink lots of really good coffee, and prefer the nerdier and geekier sides of pop culture.

I also have a website: www.victorianavarra.com. You can find links to my short stories and podcasts and whatnot there.
